Derrynane House

Derrynane House is a 19th-century house located in County Kerry, Ireland. It is the ancestral home of Daniel O'Connell (1775 – 1847), known as ‘The Liberator’ and a prominent Irish politician.

The house is now a museum dedicated to his life and works and contains a collection of O'Connell's personal artifacts, including furniture, books, and paintings, as well as a library and a museum of Irish history.

The house is set on the grounds of Derrynane National Historic Park, which includes a beach, gardens, and nature trails. The house has been restored to its original state and is managed by the Office of Public Works. It is open to the public for guided tours and is a popular tourist attraction.

Parks and Nature

Kerry is blessed with an abundance of parks and areas devoted to the preservation of our natural heritage and available for all to enjoy. Most are free to enter while some more specialised parks charge a small entrance fee to assist with their upkeep.

Meeting of the Waters

As the name implies the Meeting of the Waters is where Killarney's famous lakes converge. The Upper Lake, Middle Lake (also known as Muckross Lake), and Lower Lake (Lough Leane) all come together at this beautiful spot. It is a little haven of tranquility and can only be reached by foot or bicycle.

Also found in this area are Dinis cottage and "The Old Weir Bridge". The easiest way to reach the spot is by walking along the well-signposted path from Muckross House for approximately 5km or if you don't feel that energetic then approx one mile beyond Torc Waterfall (direction Kenmare) there is a parking spot on the right-hand side of the road. Dinis cottage is signposted from here and the cottage and "the meetings of the waters" is a 15-minute walk from here. It's definitely worth the walk on a fine day.

Torc Waterfall

Torc Waterfall is well worth visiting and like all waterfalls it is best seen after heavy rains (no problem in Kerry!). Torc Waterfall is a 5-minute walk off the N71 Killarney Kenmare road through scenic woodland. The waterfall is some 70 to 80 feet high and the Owengarriff River which feeds it rises in “The Devil’s Punchbowl” on nearby Mangerton mountain.

If you want a good viewing point of the lakes then push yourself a little further and climb the 100 or so steps immediately to the left of the waterfall to get some excellent views of the lakes. Torc Waterfall is one of Killarney’s most well-known tourist attractions and a traditional stopping point for bus and coach tours. As a result, it can get busy and congested around this area in the peak summer months.

Here is a testimonial from a happy visitor to Torc Waterfall

Reviewed by: Corrie B

The Tour was much better than I ever expected.

Would advise to go to the Torc Waterfall it was amazing and going to the top of the mountains and being able to see over Ireland and its countryside, lakes and waterfalls. so many Kodak moments. I didn't manage to catch my coach drivers name but he was a very helpful and proactive driver....

Why not visit Torc Waterfall yourself, and find out more on our Killarney Highlights Bus Tour

Note: Tour content may occasionally vary - Please check with your driver.
