The Ring of Kerry is in essence a route around the magnificent Macgillycuddy reeks, Ireland’s finest mountain range. Amongst the reeks, you will find Ireland’s highest mountain Corran Tuathail at a height of 3,414 feet. There are a number of routes up to the peak but you are best advised to buy a specific guidebook or get some detailed local advice.
Other climbs in the area include “The Purple Mountain” and “Tomies” with splendid views of the Lakes of Killarney and the Gap of Dunloe, “Circuit of Com Cailli” (hags glen), and the most rewarding of all which is the “reeks ridge walk”. This takes in all the major peaks on this mountain range and is a good long day out but not for the beginner walker.
There are 3 main access points to the MacGillycuddy Reeks at Breanlee, Lisliebane, and Cronin's Yard. Not everyone is aware that the mountains are privately owned and actively farmed. Dogs are not permitted in the Reeks.
Safety is very important if you are planning a climb. You can find view some guidelines for visitors to the MacGillyduddy Reeks Mountains at: https://www.macgillycuddyreekskerry.com/guidelines
