The Beaufort area centres on the pretty little village of Beaufort but has a wide hinterland encompassing the MacGillycuddy Reeks mountain range with Carrauntoohil - Ireland's highest mountain, Tomies Wood - Ireland's largest remaining indigenous oak woodland, The Black Valley and The Gap of Dunloe - a spectacularly beautiful mountain pass and a great tourist attraction since the last century.
The scenic beauty of the area was noticed in the early 1800's when the very first movies filmed in Ireland were shot here by the Kalem Film Productions company.
The area offers wonderful opportunities for hillwalking, archaeology, golf, horseriding and fishing. There are 5-star hotels, guesthouses, homely bed and breakfast providers, hostels and camping plus good restaurants to refuel the hungry traveller.
